Saladin was the Kurdish Sunni Caliph of Egypt- he extended his rule over Yemen and Syria, and fought the Christians during the third crusade. Because of his generosity in victory, he was regarded as a model of chivalrous, knightly behavior. Once, his arch foe Richard the Lion Heart of England was sick- Saladin learned about the illness and offered to send his own physicians to attend to the crusading king. Saladin even sent fresh fruit, and snow and ice from the mountains, to chill Richards drink.
During the battle of Arsef in 1191, Saladin -who was losing -saw that Richards horse had gone down- he sent his rival two replacements.

When Saladin died, he did not have enough money to pay for his funeral- he had given it all away to charity. A Christian king in Europe paid for a marble sarcophagus...Saladin lies in state in a mausoleum you can visit today- the room has one empty casket, the one given by the European king, and next to it, Saladin lies in a wooden box.
