England made a deliberate decision to lose the war against the rebel Colonials. Priority was given to maintain control over the Canadian provinces and Barbados. By 1780, the Crown was deep in debt, and then a war broke out in India. British forces were thus scattered around the globe, causing the eventual defeat at Yorktown.
